Are you an artist interested in securing grants for your next project but you don’t know where to begin? Do you have a wish list of artist residencies but you can’t manage to complete the applications? Considering an online fundraising campaign like Kickstarter but you’re uncertain of how to frame your project? If so, this is the workshop for you.

Whether you’ve just started researching grants, residencies, and fundraising opportunities or even if you’ve received funding but want to take your work to the next level, Application Nation will help you navigate. In this workshop we’ll discuss the tools you need to submit a compelling application starting with an overview, research tips, guidelines, and exercises to refine your pitch.

We’ll cover the four sources of contributed income—foundations, corporation, government agencies, and individuals—and we’ll discuss the pros and cons.  The workshop will offer specific attention on fundraising through grants and receiving tax-deductible gifts from individual donors (friends, colleagues, etc). We’ll cover the ins and outs of fundraising campaigns like IndieGoGo and Kickstarter; why every working artist should have a fiscal sponsor; and how events and parties raise funds.

In addition to fundraising, we’ll discuss artist residencies and fellowships and examine materials you need to apply. We’ll deconstruct a sample application, review panel trends and priorities, discuss artist statements, artist bios, project descriptions and work samples. We’ll also discuss the beauty of a deadline.

Participants will leave with an understanding of various fundraising, residency, and fellowship sources and with more confidence to navigate the applications for their next creative project. We’ll include time for a Q&A session, interactive exercises, and lively discussion. (Don’t worry, we’ll take breaks for coffee and fresh air too.)

Materials: Please bring a notebook or paper and writing instrument. If possible, please bring five images of work samples—images can be digital, but please limit to only five.

When: Saturday, August 25, 1-5pm
