Bring your most playful self and jump into the pool of printmaking processes with me! This course will allow you to dig deep into a variety of printmaking without a press processes!

First I will guide you through the thought process of printmaking and help you stretch your comfort zone into exciting new places. Stencil making, silk screening , relief printing, monotypes, creating your own stamps, gelatin prints and spontaneous glue prints will be just a few of the many techniques we will playfully explore. Many of our prints pulled will be starting points, some will be fully finished works.

Your personal style will be respected and developed through nurturing, creative technique building. Exploration of materials will be encouraged with process-oriented lessons, yet we will be celebrating the incredible end products achieved. Throughout the workshop I will encourage an exchange of ideas, mini lessons within the techniques and personal attention to each workshop participant.

Everyone will complete a stack of prints, finished artwork and loads of take-away - experience to incorporate their new-found printmaking skills into their paintings, mixed media and other artwork. For newcomers and more seasoned printmakers alike, everyone will find something new to learn In this technique laden workshop.

This workshop is great for loosening-up your art making, for adding techniques to your mixed media repertoire and great for those who make art with others – both young and old! The class will also include time for q&a so that you can ask me any and everything you'd like about my creative life as an artist, author, and teacher.

About Susan:

Susan Schwake grew up in a creative family. Her mother supported her interest in art from a very young age and made sure that she followed her dream. Doing just that, Susan studied fine art at Plymouth State University with a concentration in painting and printmaking in the 70's. For the past 17 years she has run an independent art school. She developed, wrote the curriculum for and continues to work with people of all ages and abilities. For the past eight years the art school has been part of artstream, llc which is a gallery and design studio. She has curated over 70 shows both in her own gallery and as a guest curator in others. She has been blogging since 2005 at artesprit.blogspot.com about her life as an artist, gallery owner and instructor.

Susan has worked with hundreds of people making art through residencies, community organizations and private schools over the past 13 years. During 2011 she wrote a book called Art Lab for Kids 52 projects in drawing, painting, printmaking, paper and mixed media. It is a smattering of lessons pulled  from her experiences in teaching art to children and adults. It was hard to limit it to just 52!

What is most near and dear to her heart is her own creative expression through fine art. Her work has been in exhibitions throughout the United States, New Zealand, Germany, Romania
and Mexico. She has been featured online at The Working Proof with two of her gelatin prints and at Juxtapoz with an illustration and she has written for WhipUp and Illustration Friday Blog about artists and teaching art.  She tries to follow the rule to make a line every day and finds that through that process she learns the most. She does this in her studios alongside her husband Rainer who makes each day a little more wonderful than the one before.
